Understanding Your Unique Selling Point

  • Posted by: admin_employment

USP is typically associated with products in the selling process. Even before a company considers building or designing a service or product, they have to assess a list of factors in order to ensure a level of success. The product/service has to fulfill basic needs that align with the market (what people want) as well as providing a USP–which separates it from what the competitor is offering. It is similar to a candidate such as yourself. In order to gain the edge over other job seekers especially during these ultra competitive times, you need to carefully assess your skills, experience, accomplishments, education and training.

From there, think about what makes you stand out in the job market. Think about why a company should consider you over other candidates? Write down items that separate you from other potential candidates. Are you part of associates or have an ultra specialized training which can be a focal point of your USP. When you have this pertinent information, add this to your resume and LinkedIn profile. Be sure to list multiple USPs on these places. You can also take some time to research other similar candidates in the job market. LinkedIn is a great starting point. See what other professionals are doing and done to separate themselves from other candidates. Remember, this is an exercise to get your thinking about your own USP!

When you start to fully realize your USP–you can better position yourself in the job market and truly build a professional brand that companies as well as other professionals will take notice of. However, if you feel that your USP is not as developed as you wish, take the appropriate steps in order to grow it through personal development and practice. You can also seek the perspective of others around you that you trust. Perhaps you have a great relationship with your current manager. Ask them about your USP, review ways you can refine it and truly make it shine.
